New Product Alert! Introducing ARC Aluminium Reflective Paint
At Pat McDonnell Paints, we are always expanding our product range to ensure it remains the most comprehensive in Ireland. We're excited to introduce our latest addition: ARC Aluminium Reflective Paint. This innovative coating is designed to protect and extend the life of bitumen roofing—read on to find out how it works and how to use it.
What is ARC Aluminium Reflective Paint & What Does it Do?
Arc’s Aluminium Reflective Paint is a specialised solvent-based coating designed for use on bitumen roofing (like flat roofs). It combines a specially selected grade of bitumen with high-quality aluminium flake, resulting in a traditional bright silver finish that reflects sunlight and reduces heat build-up on the roof.
Why Do Bitumen Roofs Need Reflective Paint?
Roofs are the most exposed part of any building and are particularly vulnerable to UV damage. Over time, ultraviolet rays degrade the bitumen’s chemical structure, causing it to lose flexibility, become brittle, and eventually crack. This compromises the waterproofing integrity of your roof.

How to Apply ARC Aluminium Reflective Paint
Before You Start:
For new roofs, make sure to wait for at least 14 days before painting to allow the surface to weather.
If applying the product on an existing roof, make sure to start by cleaning it thoroughly. If needed, you can then remove any fungal growth (e.g. moss, algae, etc.) by applying a fungicidal wash such as the Farbex Exterior Fungicidal Wash. Ensure the surface is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
Application Steps:
1. Surface Prep: Clean thoroughly, taking special care to remove all dust, dirt, lichen, or loose materials.
2. Stir the paint well before and during use. Aluminium pigments settle, so mix with a slow-speed drill and paddle for at least 5 minutes before starting, and remix every 10–15 minutes.
3. Apply using a masonry block brush, mid-pile roller, or for larger areas, even a soft broom. Once finished, clean your tools with White Spirit.
4. Drying time: 1–2 hours under normal conditions, though drying may take longer in cold or humid weather.
5. Wait 24 hours before allowing light foot traffic.
💡 Pro Tip:
The most important step with aluminium paint is thorough mixing. If not properly stirred, the reflective properties can be significantly reduced. Failing to regularly stir the product will result in the pigment settling at the bottom, which in turn will cause discolouration. Be patient with this step—it’s worth it!
