What Colour Should I Paint my House Exterior? Top Factors to Consider

Painting the exterior of your home is an investment and exploring all the different colour options can feel daunting. However, with a little bit of know-how you can find the perfect colour and boost your home’s curb appeal.

Tip #1: Survey Your Surroundings

When gathering inspiration, first consider your neighbourhood. Note the colours of nearby buildings and think about whether you would like your house to stand out or blend in. With a colour card in-hand, think about what colours would help you to achieve your desired look without clashing with the environment. If you’re living in an area with lots of greenery, why not take colour ideas from the landscape around you?

Tip #2: Factor in Your Home’s Features

Consider everything. For example, if you have some stone or some red brick - a complimentary colour will beautifully enhance it!” ~ Fiona Fennelly, Colour Consultant at Pat McDonnell Paints, Kilkenny
Think about the colours of any exterior features and fittings that you are not planning on changing any time soon (e.g., brickwork, windows and doors, driveway, roof, fencing or decking etc.). These elements should serve as a base to build on. By choosing a paint colour that works with your home’s unchanging features, you can create a beautiful colour scheme that shows off your exterior. As our Cork-based Colour Consultant, Fiona Finnegan , advises “ Take into account the style of the house (inside and outside) and its surroundings .”

Tip #3: Test, Test, Test

Whatever you choose: Test, Test, Test!” ~ Anne Curtin, Colour Consultant at Pat McDonnell Paints Galway
Use colour cards to narrow down your selection to your top choices and pick up a few testers to see how they will look on the walls. Paint large test patches and keep an eye on them over the course of the day to see how the colours change in different lights. Bear in mind that the colour may appear different on different sides of your home depending on how much sunlight each side receives. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to assess your test patches.
